As someone who has never been to foreign country whose language I am studying, I don't have a clue what it means to understand a foreign culture first hand. However, I can see the importance. Language is one of the most social task we can do as humans, so language is inevitably intertwined into our culture. Ergo understanding the culture of the language you are learning gives you a deeper understanding. I don't know how to explain how the understanding takes place, however it is one of those thing that doesn't necessarily have to be explained. Obviously, I do believe the understanding of the culture of a language you are studying can be a beneficial part to your learning.
The examinations of the lyrics and themes found in Calle Trece's song "Latinoamerica" aided me to examine my understanding of what my culture is, or what it is not. Through depicting the lyrics, I was able to uncover the themes of the song, and in turn was able to ask myself 'what made me, me'. With a series of lessons and overwrites planned by Sarah Armstrong (Sarita) I began to investigate different parts of my life that contributed to my culture. This includes where I grew up, how I was raised, relationships in my life etc. This is a substantial thing to be able to do. After this project, I know have a much deeper of understanding of how my culture influences my life and the path of life I will trek in the future. I remember hearing phrases in the past such as 'I am my up bringing' and 'Culture of the mind must be subservient to the heart' but I never took the time to truly analyses and reflect upon my culture until this project, ergo showing me an understanding of my culture.
